Good evening.

I had an idea of what this place was when I accepted the invitation, but my understanding was flawed. It's been several days since we were "invited," but the picture isn't any clearer. If anything, I understand less and less what this hotel is.

We can reasonably assume the staff here is responsible for the poisonings/curses at the spa. At the same time as this, they've been feeding and housing us for free. If they wanted to actually hurt us, there's no reason they wouldn't have already.

There's also the matter of the "wish."

I'm posing the question to all of you to consolidate info. What is this hotel?

Where do you think we are?
Why were we invited?

B. B.

[He does know that guy!]

I quite agree. It's hardly cynical to wish to examine a complex situation from every possible angle, only thorough.

I notice you put magic in quotation marks, but yes, I do, and it's certainly possible. It's also possible that there was a master in the past, but they no longer remain. Magic can outlive those who weave it, if it's strong enough.

Here I thought it might be a not-so-subtle expression of disbelief. Regardless, I am glad to be able to offer my experience, and hope that it will be of some aid. I am very, very interested in getting to the bottom of what makes all of this tick, so to speak.

Any spell, artifact or other source of power that lasts beyond its creator's own lifespan tends to be quite powerful, indeed. Often dangerous, as most power has the potential to be, though that can depend on it falling into the wrong hands. We have no evidence this is the case, of course, but no evidence that it isn't, either. We must consider every possibility with so many unknown factors at play.

an excruciatingly long time for him to do all of this painfully accurate hunting and pecking

Now now, none of that! No admitting defeat before we've truly begun. To every question, there is an answer, even if it may take some time in the seeking.

Admittedly, there are few for now, but any insight I can offer along the way, I certainly shall.

I'll sort that out when I have it, I suppose.
I consider our time here to be a great opportunity.

Not terribly fond of the endeavor yourself, then.
Perhaps you simply haven't read the right book! That's neither here nor there, I suppose. We're all rather different, but I confess that I'm something of a typical wizard in this regard.

That's more difficult to summarize than you might expect. Magic is capable of all sorts of things, depending on the wielder. Conjuration, enchantment, divination, healing— there's no shortage of possibilities, though I confess that healing and the like is better left to clerics or druids. That sort of magic tends to be divine-inspired, but the rest? A wizard draws on the power of the Weave as a musician relies on their instrument: it is the combination of the two that makes music or magic.

[yeah it absolutely is]

A vast oversimplification, perhaps, but that does more or less sum it up, yes.

I suppose it's a bit of both, depending on where you go and who you ask. It rather feels like the latter, these days.

Evocation as of late, though I'm also quite skilled with enchantment and abjuration. Though I don't intend it as a boast, a wizard of my education and experience is expected to be well-learned in a number of areas. I spent a good while serving as an agent of Mystra, and thus needed to be well-prepared to destroy or otherwise contain any dark magic I might encounter in my travels.

oh boy you asked for it

Goddess of all magic. For a time, I served as her Chosen. Those days are past, yet all I learned during the experience is timeless. I do not intend to let it go to waste.

[He's not entirely wrong...]

I've done my best to do so, as much as my circumstances will allow.
I enjoyed a great deal of privilege as Mystra's Chosen, but for a number of reasons, that time has come and gone.
