Well well, would you look at that? The place didn’t burn itself down while I was gone, though not for lack of trying. Or so I’ve been told.

Anyway, it looks like we’ve acquired some new faces in the last month. In the grand tradition of the hotel forcing us to get to know one another, why don’t we play a little game?

Is everyone familiar with “two truths and a lie”? It’s simple enough. List three things about yourself, one of which is not true. Others must guess which is the lie.

Here, I’ll go first.

Does this mean I've succeeded at the game? I realize the goal is to get to know one another, but I seem to have managed to bamboozle more than a few of you! I suppose tattoos really do have associations for a certain kind of personality or demeanor, don't they?

In any case, you are correct! I don't share a birthday with my grandfather.

I don't know that we're keeping score, but you certainly have managed to misdirect a number of us! I do believe that counts for something. Nicely done, Sumina— and I do feel as though I've gotten to know you a bit better as a result. I didn't realize you played the piano, though I'm not surprised to learn you're musical. You do seem the sort.

Thank you, Gale. And to be fair, I'm a bit out of practice. I've been able to play now and gain here, but nowhere near to the level where I might hold a recital or anything of the sort.

My grandfather - whom I don't share a birthday with - is a bard, and he taught me how to play in my youth.

And as for you, Gale... is your first bit the lie? I wonder if, even as brilliant as you are, you were rebellious when it came to following the curriculum.

The wonderful thing about vacation, I suppose, is that you have all the time you like to do such things! To an extent, given that you've managed to bring your work along with you— as have I, admittedly.

You're quite right about mine, as well! I did have a knack for getting myself into trouble, and was rarely satisfied with what learning opportunities were offered me. I always found myself wanting more, and didn't much care about breaking the rules in order to get it.

Aha. I had a few classmates like you where I went to school, you know. I can picture you as such perfectly. How many accidental summonings did you take part in?

Oh, accidental? None. Intentional... that's another story entirely. Of course, sometimes those intentional summonings did lead to unintentional results. I'm still great friends with the magma mephit I met through one such summoning to this day!

A magma mephit. Goodness. You didn't happen to run into one while the floors turned to lava, did you?

That reminds me - I'd love to hear more about your exploits in the Astral Plane, too, Gale.

Fortunately not, though I was concerned we might. Troublesome little buggers; they tend to explode, which is really quite messy and best avoided if possible.

I would be happy to fill you in on such exploits! [Ahem, most of them.] Those are best shared during our next coffee excursion, I think, but I would be glad to offer them, and perhaps hear a bit more about your family's ventures there in return?
