Well well, would you look at that? The place didn’t burn itself down while I was gone, though not for lack of trying. Or so I’ve been told.

Anyway, it looks like we’ve acquired some new faces in the last month. In the grand tradition of the hotel forcing us to get to know one another, why don’t we play a little game?

Is everyone familiar with β€œtwo truths and a lie”? It’s simple enough. List three things about yourself, one of which is not true. Others must guess which is the lie.

Here, I’ll go first.

[ TL;DR - We’re playing two truths and a lie now! Thread hop around and tag each other! Winter will be hopping around to play too, but if folks just want to chat with him now that he’s back that is also fine! ]

it's more that you strike me as someone who has a library and would create a cat out of spite, i guess.

Well, I can hardly deny either claim. I'm afraid I was a bit much for my professors to handle at times, ever seeking greater challenges. My thirst to gain a greater understanding of magic could simply not be sated.

[Kaveh has the distinct feeling that he's walking the path to being part of a joke he doesn't understand.]

i can understand the seeking greater challenges part. i feel the same, except about design.

were you the opposite of model student, then? or just doing enough to get by in class without trouble up front?

Design! I would love to hear more about that, when you have the time and inclination.

[He may not be an architect or designer himself, but he's still quite interested!]

As for your question, my work itself was exemplary. Academically, I considered myself to be unparalleled, but I found other ways to get into trouble. For instance, I wrote lines for hours upon hours when I was discovered opening portals to other planes unsupervised.

i've been told i don't shut up about my job once i start talking about it, so you might want to reconsider whether that's what you want.

["Portals to other planes" sounds a lot like the Abyss, which Kaveh hasn't spent extensive time studying, but has come up in relation to the research he did as a younger student. He considers some of his classmates at that age, and what they would have been like if they could open doors to the Abyss for fun, and he physically recoils from the keyboard for a moment.]

was there a reason you started doing that?

As a matter of fact, I've been told much the same. I would be a poor sport indeed if I was unwilling to listen to someone else speak on their passions! Quite the contrary, I very much enjoy doing so.

[As for his question...]

Well, I had already summoned a tressym at that point, and I didn't feel I ought to have to wait until my mentor deemed I was 'ready' to summon an elemental when I clearly already possessed the capability.

Results were mixed.

i was with you until "tressym." i'm not sure i've ever heard of that.

[He can infer, a little. Some Vision users summon constructs, to make better use of their own unique abilities alongside their element - and "summon an elemental" feels like it could be that.

But he's known Gale for, what, a week? And there's nothing in him if not suddenly curving paths.]

is it the breed of your talking cat?

[personal profile] netherese 2024-02-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed, though I would not let her overhear you calling her a cat, despite the obvious similarities. Tressyms are highly intelligent creatures that have been loyal companions to many in the magical community over the centuries! Tara is a wizard in her own right, though occasionally set back by her lack of thumbs. That's where I come in handy, I suppose.

[He's Tara's pet, if you ask her, and not the other way around.]

[Oh. He didn't expect that to be a correct guess. One point for Kaveh.]

a wizard.

[Like in children's tales?]

we'll put that aside for now. it was a big deal that you could summon one?

[Kaveh is doing very well at this game, in fact!]

At that age and without instruction on how to do so, most certainly. I was something of a prodigy, I'm afraid, but as such, quite given to mischief.
mehrakulous: (handling it)

[personal profile] mehrakulous 2024-02-26 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Huh. Kaveh does know a couple of prodigies. They...aren't prone to getting into trouble, not really. One of them only works when he's paid; another spends most of his time getting other people out of the stupid messes they got themselves into. Of the two, one is definitely more likely to discover or invent some new kind of trouble while pursuing something he finds interesting...]

i guess i'm missing what part of befriending a cat (familiar?) makes it mischief.

That one in particular was largely because my mother was so adamant that I wasn't allowed to have one, admittedly. Otherwise, only significant in that I managed to do it without any formal training. My mother came around to Tara quite quickly, as well. Now they're the best of friends, and spend far too many teatimes discussing how they're going to get me married off.

There were, admittedly, other portals later on that were far more mischievous, and resulted in accidental summoning of other creatures, in addition to an unintentional trip to Limbo. I didn't hear the end of that one for a long while.
